BackgroundEdit

G. Ugo Nwokeji received his doctorate from the University of Toronto in 1999, joined the Department in 2003 from the University of Connecticut, where he had taught for four years. A specialist in African and Atlantic history, his primary research focus is the slave trade from Africa, which he approaches from a perspective that speaks to culture formation in the Americas. With Professor David Eltis of Emory University, Professor Nwokeji is presently creating a database of ethnic background of 70,000 Africans who were rescued from slave ships by the British navy during the 19th century.

Professor Nwokeji is currently completing a book manuscript dealing with the slave trade in the Bight of Biafra, as well as coediting a book, to be titled "Religion, History and Politics in Nigeria." In the past few years, he has been Research Associate of the W.E.B. Dubois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University, Fellow at the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition, Yale University, and Visiting Scholar at the Center for Modern Oriental Studies, Berlin, Germany.[1]
